Gigsville 2008 Town Hall Meeting Minutes
From Gig-Project
[edit] Gigsville Town Hall Meeting: Held December 31st, 2007
The purpose of the town hall meeting was so that Jet Fuel and Normal (our mayors for the 2008 Burn) would discuss their vision for the event and hear what ideas the community had.
For the event:
Normal will take on communications with the Bmorg.
JetFuel will take on social engineering and mapping.
As a pair they are looking for 2008 to be a return to the ideals of Gigsville in 1998. We are looking for radical self sufficiency.
We are looking to join together and work on projects to get things done. This year will follow the tenets that Gigsville is not a democracy.
When there are things to be decided, input will be accepted, nut the decisions will be quick. (Less talking, more doing.)
First Topic: Location
Jet and Normal believe it is time for us to throw down again. As the playa's oldest village, it is time for us to remind the playa of why. To that end, they would like us to move either back to the esplanade or to one of the main spokes.
What would it take for Bmorg to give us that land?
• Visual Continuity (We Need to Look Like 1 Village-Be identifiable as Gigsville)
• Smaller Footprint (We must take up less space)
• 24 Hour Interactivity (We must be welcoming to visitors at all hours)
As a whole, this idea was well received by those in attendance. Issues that were discussed:
• VC: Something as simple as Windmills, The Gates as in the Doomocratic year, or something along that effect will work to help us achieve that
• Less Space: If we move to the esplanade or a loophole, we may be able to move Ubie out of our circle, significantly decreasing the space we need. Non use cars will be moved out the village. Perhaps splitting the village into the “Doer” portion, and the “Residential” portion. Perhaps eliminating open camping. Perhaps requiring that any camp that wants to camp with us must do so in the next month or two rather than at the last minute. Less space will require foot paths and better planning.
• 24 Hour Interactivity: This is something that needs to be looked at. Just being a bar is not what we're necessarily looking for here. (not that we're against bars) The Bmorg has told Normal that they know it doesn't always work as 24 hour interactivity, but we must give it a good effort. We know that being closer will also require better cleanup plans for post event as more traffic = more trash. What do we have to do now to make our request be heard?
• We must get our projects started now so we know that we have the “put up” to “shut them up”
• We must map as early as possible
Topic 2: Projects.
There are Many. If you did not attend, we want to hear what yours are as well. There will be a separate email post listing all we have now in a day or two. For a teaser I will say that aside from windmills, we will have a slushie bar and tittie washing station under Ubie and that Heathervescent is going to build a second Carbecue.
This was a large focus of the meeting. What are You going to Do?
Topic 3: Fees
There will be a mandatory fee of $20 per person to camp in Gigsville in 2008. You will not be mapped without paying your fee. Prior to now, it has been a “suggested” donation. We feel that with the cost to attend the Burn, there should be noone that this fee stops from attending.
Noosha is taking over the job of Village Treasurer. (We bow to Mz Mercury for her years of tireless work.)
There will be transparency on where these fees are going. They will be used for wood, transportation of the carbecue and Ubie, and possibly storage facilities up near Black Rock. These fees will not be used for purchasing booze.
Topic 4: Awesome. It will be. And you can be a part of it. What will You Do? That's the meeting notes. What the notes don't tell you was that it was a meeting filled with laughter and hope. There were doubts expressed about certain things, but we're going to work together to find out how to overcome those. Like I said, awesome.
